Dr. Boeren

Veterinarian

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Dr. Laura Boeren, and I’m an Associate Veterinarian here at Heartland Veterinary Hospital. I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Illinois in 2001. After graduation, I began practicing full-time and later transitioned into part-time work while raising my two kids. During my time as a stay-at-home mom, I shifted into relief veterinary work, and although I attempted retirement in 2014, it didn’t stick! I found my way back to clinical practice in 2017 and officially joined the Heartland team in 2023, where I’ve been happily working full-time ever since.

Why did you choose to become a veterinarian?

I chose to become a veterinarian because it’s something I’ve been passionate about since third grade. I’ve always had a strong connection to animals and a curiosity about medicine, so veterinary care was a natural path for me. I never really considered doing anything else!

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite parts of being a veterinarian are client interaction and surgery. I genuinely enjoy building relationships with pet owners and helping guide them through their pet’s health journey.

What are your personal hobbies and interests?

I love playing soccer, playing my ukulele, and spending time creating pen drawings and practicing calligraphy.

What certifications do you hold?

I’m Low Stress Handling Certified through Cattle Dog Publishing. This certification focuses on reading an animal’s body language and adapting handling techniques or the clinical environment to reduce fear and anxiety in pets. It’s a skill that helps create a more positive veterinary experience for both pets and their people.

What professional associations are you a member of?

I’m a proud member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Southern Illinois Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA).

Have you received any awards or recognition?

I’m proud to hold the most meaningful title of all: “Mother of the Year.” My family means everything to me, and balancing my career in veterinary medicine with motherhood has been one of my greatest accomplishments.
